SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In the first race of the spring, Santa Clara women's rowing had a good showing at the Davis Invitational on March 6. The Broncos finished first in two races and second in three others.

The Varsity 8 was able to take first place over Davis and Mills College.

"We were able to get a good clean start and get in front of Davis," said Santa Clara head coach John Wojtkiewicz. "They pushed us all the way down the course but our crew hung tough on to their lead and was even able to open it up in the last 500 meters. The conditions (wind and tide) slowed us down time-wise, but the crew put together a good piece and I was proud of their composure despite constant pressure from Davis all the way down the course."

The Varsity Four also took first place.

"Varsity four had a great race, opening up the lead early and continuing to walk away down the course," said Wojtkiewicz. "There was a lot of gutsy racing there; they committed to the race and did not relent for a single stroke."

The JV 8 boat came in second behind Davis' A boat.

"Our JV struggled to find a good rhythm to keep up with Davis, and it is something we will continue to work on as we get ready for the Crew Classic next month," said Wojtkiewicz. "We were happy to stay ahead of the other two crews, but we will work on making up the gap in the weeks to come."

The JV four and Novice four both finished in second as well.

"Their results were solid but I think both crews thought they could have done better," said Wojtkiewicz. "We'll continue to train and work towards putting together more consistent pieces for those crews."

The Broncos next race April 2-3 at the San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay.
