MADERA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University women's golf team is currently in third place after two rounds of play at the West Coast Conference Championship at Riverbed Golf Club in Madera.
Santa Clara shot a 296 second round on the par-72, 5,853-yard layout, besting the program's record for a team round, set last week at the Matador Spring Invitational, where the Broncos carded a 299. Prior to this season, Santa Clara had not broken the 300 plateau and the team has done it now twice in as many weeks. The Broncos fired a 304 to open the day and have a two-round total of 600, 24 strokes over par.
Pepperdine and San Francisco, who have held the WCC title since the women's golf championship was added in 1997, are currently first and second. The Waves carded a two-under 574, while the Dons are11 over at 587. Gonzaga (613) and Portland (645) round out the top five.
Three Broncos are tied for seventh at five-over: Samantha Trask (73-76--149), Meggie Fagundes (77-72--149) and Courtney Dimpel-Composti (76-73--149). Candice Palmer is tied for 14fth at (78-75--153) and Paige Wilson is in 23rd place (84-78--162). Dimpel-Composti (73) and Wilson (78) shot collegiate lows today, while Fagundes tied hers (72).
"We're happy with our position and hope to hold it tomorrow," head coach Polly Schulze said.
Pepperdine's Carolina Liano leads the individual competition after carding a five-under 139.
The Broncos will close out the spring season with the final round of the WCC Championship tomorrow morning.
