The Santa Clara University women's golf team recently completed its season under fourth-year head coach Polly Schulze. Season highlights include:
Santa Clara broke into the top three for the first time in five years as the Broncos placed third at the West Coast Conference Championships, hosted at Riverbed Golf Club in Madera. Head coach Polly Schulze was named the league's Coach of the Year, the first such honor for the Bronco program. Freshman Samantha Trask was named to the All-WCC first team, while junior Courtney Dimpel-Composti and sophomore Meggie Fagundes received honorable mention recognition. Santa Clara finished with a three-round total of 928 on the par-72, 5,853-yard layout. Trask finished in sixth place to lead the squad, while Dimpel-Composti tied for eighth, and Fagundes tied for 10th at 233. Sophomore Candice Palmer also made the top 15, tied for 14th.
The Broncos won two events this year, the Sacramento State Fall Invitational and the Matador Spring Invitational. SCU carded a program-record 299 in the final round in Simi Valley to win their second tournament of the season. An added bonus was that they won the event by a one-stroke margin over host CS Northridge, a team ranked 20 spots higher than the Broncos in regional rankings.
Entering the season, Santa Clara's best round had been a 312, a mark the squad broke a dozen times during this past season. However, breaking the 300 barrier was one of the team's top goals, and they did it twice in the final two weeks of the season. The Broncos carded a 299 in the final round of the Matador Spring Invitational, and topped that with a program-best 296 in the second round of the West Coast Conference Championship.
Sophomore Meggie Fagundes was one of 17 Broncos across all 17 SCU sport programs to be honored by the West Coast Conference for academic achievement. A Business major with a 3.07 GPA, Fagundes was named to the All-Academic team for the first time in her collegiate career.
Freshman Paige Wilson carded her first-ever eagle on her 19th birthday. The freshman was participating in her first WCC Championship on April 12 in Madera. Playing her 32nd hole of the day, Wilson was looking at a par-4, 394-yard layout. She played a driver-5-iron just in the rough but knocked it in from about 145 yards. "That eagle really turned my day around," she said. "I was tired, but that shot really brought me mentally back into the game to finish strong. She closed that round with a 78 and finished the individual competition in 22nd place.
