RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Santa Clara softball got the Highlander Classic going with a 4-2 win over UTEP Friday morning.
Sammy Needham led the way for the Broncos (3-3) on offense, collecting three hits, including a pair of doubles, and three RBIs. Allyson Ferreira also knocked in a run for Santa Clara and picked up two hits with a run scored.
Needham got her team on the board right out of the gate, with a one out double in the first that scored Ashley Trierweiler.
Two innings later she added two more RBIs with another double to get the Broncos out on top 3-0.
Regan Dias (3-0) went the distance for Santa Clara to pick up the win. She allowed two runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
The Miners (0-6) got on the board with a pair of runs in the fourth. Idalis Mendez knocked in the first run with a double and later came in to score on a sac fly by Ariana Valles.
Mendez finished the day with two this, the only UTEP player with multiple hits. Five others picked up on apiece, with Kasey Flores' being a double. Pate Cathey also drew a pair of walks.
Isabella Kelley (0-3) got the loss while tossing a complete game. She allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits with a walk and a strikeout.

The Broncos play Idaho State at 11:30 a.m. and UC Riverside at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
