Softball Falls Twice To Open Silicon Valley Classic

Silicon Valley Classic Central

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball dropped two games on Friday on the first day of the Silicon Valley Classic. The Broncos (5-6) fell to Yale (1-1) 9-7 and Boise State (7-5) 9-0 in 6 innings.

GAME 1
Finding themselves down 8-2 through four innings, the Broncos came back with two in the seventh and three more in the sixth to cut the deficit to just one but the Bulldogs responded with an insurance run in the seventh and got Santa Clara in order in the bottom of the frame to close things out.

Yale got two hits and three RBIs apiece from Annie Tarte and Sydney Grobman to spark the offense. Olivia Vinyard and Kortney Ponce both added an RBI and a hit with Tarte, Lindsey Kuss, and Sam Goodcase all scoring two runs. Eight of nine starters picked up at least one hit.

Miranda Papes (1-0) started and allowed two runs in 4 innings with a punchout. After Mary Baumann gave up five runs in 1 2/3 innings of relief, Julia Grobman picked up her first save of the year with 1 1/3 perfect innings.

Santa Clara's offense really got going in the fifth when a bases loaded walk and a sac fly scored two. In the sixth, a pair of singles and an RBI groundout brought three across.

Eleni Spirakis was 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored from the leadoff spot and Ashley Trierweiler added three hits, three runs scored, and an RBI out of the two-hole. Sammy Needham and Emma Bickford also added two RBIs each.

Lauren Schiek (0-1) started and took the loss in 2 1/3 innings. She surrendered six runs, five earned, on seven hits with a strikeout. Lauren Anderson allowed her team to get back in in with 3 2/3 innings of relief with just an unearned run coming across.

GAME 2
Kelsey Broadus (5-0) dominated for Boise State, going all 6 innings and striking out 12 while allowing three hits.

The offense was steady throughout for the Broncos, closing things out with three consecutive multi-run innings after single runs in the first and second.

Despite all the runs, no Boise State player had more than one RBI and only India Kelly scored more than one run, coming across the plate three times. Kelly added two hits with Kelsey Lalor smacking a pair of doubles to go with a run scored and an RBI. Three others had two hits apiece.

Hannah Edwards (1-3) took the loss in a 6 inning compete game. She allowed nine runs, five earned, on 13 hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Trierweiler, Edwards, and Liyah Lopez had the Santa Clara hits, all singles.
