UC DAVIS TOURNAMENT CENTRAL | SACRAMENTO STATE TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara softball began the Capital Classic by dropping a pair of games against UConn and UC Davis. The Broncos (7-10) fell to the Huskies (9-2) 10-1 in 6 innings to open the day and 8-5 to the Aggies (9-8) in the afternoon.

GAME 1
UConn's offense got off to a hot start and never slowed down. The Huskies scored four runs in the first and added another in the second before scoring three in the fourth and two in the fifth to close things out.

The two through four spots in the lineup had all the RBIs for UConn. Reese Guevarra had a two-run home run and scored two runs with Briana Marcelino going 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBIs, and two runs scored and Olivia Sappington knocking in two. Aziah James was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored out of the leadoff spot.

Marybeth Olson (5-0) started and got the win, tossing 4 innings. She allowed a run on three hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

Allyson Ferreira drove in the lone Santa Clara run in the third with an RBI single, scoring Sarah Ellersick who had reached via a single. Sammy Needham picked up the other Broncos hit.

UC Davis scored seven early runs and made it hold up despite a big fifth inning from Santa Clara and a rally in the seventh that brought the go ahead run to the plate.

The seventh started with Needham reaching on and error and featured a one out walk and a two out single that loaded the bases. With the tying run on base, Ferreira popped out to end the rally and the game.

After getting two in the second without a hit, the Aggies added five more in the third, highlighted by a home run from Riley Siegel and three doubles, to take a 7-0 lead.

Maddie Rojas finished the game with a double, a run scored, and three RBIs and Alyse Rojas added two a double and a home run while driving in two.

Kenedi Brown (3-3) picked up the win for the Aggies in 4 1/3 innings. She gave up four runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout.

The Broncos rallied in the fifth to cut the deficit to just two. Emma Bickford had the big blast with a three run homer and Emily Eudy's sac fly made the score 7-5.

Eleni Spirakis was 4-for-4 from the leadoff spot with a run scored to join Bickford and Eudy in leading the offense.

Aubree Kim (0-3) started but struggled with her command, walking six in 1-plus inning of work. She allowed two runs while also punching out one.
