Volleyball Wins PowerBar Invitational

Sept. 3, 2000

BOULDER, Colo. - Senior Amy Kohl posted a career-high 27 kills to lead Santa Clara to a five-game victory over host Colorado, winning the PowerBar Invitational this afternoon at the Coors Event Center.

The Broncos won by a score of 13-15, 15-7, 12-15, 15-13, 15-4, giving the program its first 2-0 start since the 1993 season. Colorado fell to 1-1.

Kohl's efforts over the weekend Invitational earned her Tournament MVP honors. Bronco senior outside hitter Ynez Carrasco was also named to the all tournament team.

Head coach Jon Wallace received an entire team effort, as five attackers reached double figures and four players posted double-doubles. In addition to Kohl's 27 kills, Carrasco posted 17, junior Jami Bari 15, senior Brook Terhune 14 and senior Annika Dell 10. Carrasco added 19 digs and Bari recorded 10 digs for their respective double-doubles. Terhune tied a school five-game match record of 10 block assists to earn her double-double while senior setter Roz Pelayo posted 58 assists and 15 digs.

Pelayo earned a spot in Santa Clara recordbooks with her 38th assist in this afternoon's second game, as she now holds the school's career assist mark. She now has 4,442, surpassing Kris Kosnoski's 4,421 mark, set during her 1990-93 career.

Additionally, Carrasco moved into third place all time with her 17 kills this afternoon. Her career totals 1,247 kills, just 31 away from moving into second place on the all-time list and 249 away from breaking Lia Young's 1990-93 mark.

The two squads went back and forth throughout the first game as the deficit never exceeded two points. The same held true during the second frame until a 6-0 Bronco run created a 10-5 lead that Santa Clara did not relinquish.

Down 8-3 in the third, Colorado outscored Santa Clara 12-5 to take a 2-1 match lead. The Broncos then showed the same kind of fight, coming back from a 6-1 deficit to take game four, 15-13. Santa Clara carried that momentum into the final rally-scoring game. Taking control early, the squad never looked back as they won the final game 15-4.

The Broncos will travel to Stockton and play No. 12 Pacific on Tues., Sept. 5. The match will begin at the Spano Center at 7 p.m.
