SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The 17th-ranked Santa Clara volleyball team opened its home season with its 10th straight victory, sweeping George Mason tonight at the Pat Malley Center in non-conference action.
After 15 straight matches on the road to open the season, the Broncos were excited to play in front of a home crowd to the tune of a 15-11, 15-5, 15-5 victory.
"It feels really good to play at home," head coach Jon Wallace said. "I was really worried coming into last night's match because I think the girls were excited about playing here tonight, but then after we won that (a 3-0 win at USF), I was worried that the girls would be too amped up to play at home. I think we were early, but we settled down and played well."
The Broncos improve to 15-1 overall, while George Mason falls to 8-4 on the season. This was the first meeting between the two programs.
Santa Clara was led by senior middle blocker Amy Kohl, who posted 11 kills and one error for a .588 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Ynez Carrasco led all attackers with 18 kills on the night. The Broncos were led defensively by senior middle blocker Brook Terhune's four blocks. As a team, Santa Clara recorded a season-best .394 hitting percentage.
George Mason was led by Aline Pereira and Natalia Torres-Tirado, who posted 15 and 10 kills, respectively.
The Broncos will return to league play and host West Coast Conference opponents Saint Mary's and San Diego next weekend. Santa Clara will host the Gaels on Friday, Oct. 13 and the Toreros the following night, Saturday, Oct. 14. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. in the Pat Malley Center.
