Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Eight players posted double-digit kills as the 16th-ranked Santa Clara women's volleyball team defeated San Francisco in four games tonight at the Pat Malley Center.

With the conference victory the Broncos improve to 21-3 on the season, 9-1 in the WCC, while the Lady Dons fall to 11-10, 3-7 in the league. Santa Clara has now matched its 1999 season win total and--with six matches left on the schedule--is five victories away from matching the program's best mark for wins in a season, set by the 1991 squad.

USF's Teresa Russell led all attackers with 27 kills, while senior Ynez Carrasco led the Broncos with 25. The two-hour match saw numerous side outs, as 23 service errors, 12 service aces, 11 blocking errors and six ball-handling errors dominated the statistics.

The first game was close, with no team more than three points away from the other, until two kills each by Carrasco, senior Brook Terhune and freshman Becky Potter gave SCU a 13-7 edge. Carrasco's eighth kill of the frame gave the Broncos game one as SCU hit .370.

Game two was more of the same, as side outs dominated before USF took a 6-5 edge. Santa Clara rallied for four straight scores and then closed out the game. USF took a 3-1 lead in the third frame before Santa Clara found itself up 14-7. Five Santa Clara errors allowed the Dons back in it for the 16-14 win. It marked the first time this season that an opponent has won a game on SCU's home court, breaking a string of 17 games.

Santa Clara spotted USF a 4-0 lead in the final frame before recording seven straight points with three kills from Carrasco. Senior Amy Kohl and freshman Jessie Mechem posted the match's final points with their block assists on the Broncos' third match point.

The Broncos will remain at home and host California in non-conference action on Tuesday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m.
