LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The 15th-ranked Santa Clara volleyball team defeated No. 23 Loyola Marymount in straight games tonight at Gersten Pavilion.
Santa Clara's record improves to 18-2 on the season, 6-1 in the WCC. The Lions fall to 15-6 overall, 5-2 in league action.
The win marked the sixth sweep for the Broncos in their last seven matches. Game scores for tonight's contest was 15-9, 15-6, 15-7.
Game one began with Santa Clara taking an early 7-4 lead only to see the Lions knot the score at eight and again at nine. That was enough to incite another Bronco rally as SCU went on to take game one from there. After matching the Lions point for point in the second frame and tying the score at four, Santa Clara rattled off eight straight points. The Lions managed to put up just two more scores as the Broncos took a two-games-to-none lead. As a team, SCU hit a .302 clip in the final game to take the match.
The Broncos were led by senior Ynez Carrasco, who hit .394 on the evening, putting down 16 kills on 33 attacks. Freshman Becky Potter was the only other Bronco to hit double-digit kills, collecting 10 on the night.
LMU's Sarah McFarland led all attackers with 23 kills while freshman Tiana Newsome stuffed a match-high six blocks.
The Broncos return home and host Portland and Gonzaga to open the second half of WCC play on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 27 & 28. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m. at the Pat Malley Center.
