Volleyball Falls In Three at No. 8 Stanford

Santa Clara hung tough for three sets, but fell at No. 8 Stanford 3-0 on Friday night. Set scores were 10-25, 15-25 and 14-25.  Santa Clara plays Pacific at 12 pm Saturday before closing out play in the Stanford Invitational vs. Loyola Chicago at 8 pm.  Santa Clara moves to 6-2 and No. 8 Stanford is now 4-2.

Santa Clara collected 27 kills (27 e, 102 att.) , hitting .000.  The Broncos had 25 assists, 31 digs, three service aces, five service errors and one team block.  Stanford collected 37 kills (four e, 78 att.) , hitting .423.  The Cardinal had 36 assists, 39 digs, five service aces, five service errors and 11 team blocks.

Taylor Milton and Megan Anders both collected a team-high six kills.  Alyssa Anderson had 13 assists and two digs.  Chelsea Heier had 10 assists and six digs.  Milton also added eight digs.  Katherine Douglas, Milton and Ali Rambis all had one ace each.

Stanford was led by Jordan Burgess' nine kills with zero errors.

In set one, Anders got the Broncos on the board first with a crushing kill to the back row followed by a kill by Schatzman, 3-2 Stanford.  Lommori's kill off the block and an ace by Douglas gave the Broncos a 4-3 lead.  A kill off the Bronco block gave SU a 6-4 lead but Milton responded with one of her own to make it 6-5.  Anders crushed it give the Broncos a sideout, 8-6 Stanford.  The Cardinal scored four straight points to put them up 12-6 when Wallace whistled for time.   After a Cardinal service error, SU scored three straight, 15-7 SU.  SCU scored a point before Stanford scored four straight again, 19-8 Cardinal. Timeout Broncos.   Katy Schatzman went out with a sprained ankle and Ali Rambis stepped off the bench to take over as the libero.  Stanford kept rolling and won set one 25-10. SCU hit -.105 with seven kills (11 e, 38 att.).  Stanford hit .464 with 13 kills (0 e, 28 att.). 

Anders started set two with a kill in the back row.  The Broncos tied it 2-2 on a kill to the back row, but Carly Wopat crushed it to the back to give SU the ball.  Milton's kill in the middle tied it 3-3.  The teams tied up at 4 and 5.  A Rambis ace floated across the net, point Broncos.  Cameron and Lommori connected on a team block after a long rally, 8-7 SU.  Stanford scored four straight  before Milton's kill off the block gave the Broncos the ball, down 12-9.  Trading points, Burgess again split the block to put the Cardinal up 15-10.  Timeout Broncos.  Cameron connected in the back row for a kill, 16-11 SU, but the Cardinal scored two more. Timeout Broncos.  Another Burgess ace and two more points made it 21-11 SU. Timeout Broncos.  The Broncos rallied to score four straight, 21-15 SCU.  The Cardinal scored four straight to win set two 25-15.  SCU hit .000 with eight kills (eight e, 33 att.).  Stanford hit .281 with 13 kills (4 e, 32 att.). 

In set three Anders tied it up at 2-2 with a kill to the left side.  Two aces by Wopat made it 5-2 SU.  Williamson's kill off the block made it 5-3 SU.  Cameron's kill to the back row brought the Broncos within two, 6-4 SCU. Trading points, Douglas collected a kill on a dump, 7-6 SU.  Lommori smacked it to the back row for a kill.  Moving forward, another Lommori kill to the back row brought SCU within one, 10-9 Cardinal.  Stanford scored four straight, including one off an ace.  Trading points again, Santa Clara whistled for time down 15-10.  A Cardinal error gave SCU the ball, but Stanford scored two straight to go up 18-11 before Milton smacked it cross-court for a kill, 18-12 SU.  Stanford rallied to score three straight, timeout Broncos.  After a long rally, Stanford connected for a kill.  A Cardinal service error made it 23-13 SU.  Stanford scored the last two of three points of the match to win set three 25-14.  SCU hit .129 with 12 kills (eight e, 31 att.). Stanford hit .611 with 11 kills (0 e, 18 att.).
