Volleyball Sweeps Pepperdine; on Longest Winning Streak since 2007

MALIBU, Calif. — Santa Clara volleyball is on its longest winning streak since 2007 with six straight victories following a 25-15, 25-18, 25-22 sweep of Pepperdine at Firestone Fieldhouse Thursday night. The Broncos have won nine of their last 10 matches and nine sets in a row.

Santa Clara's 6-1 West Coast Conference record keeps the team tied for first in the WCC; BYU swept Gonzaga and San Diego swept Portland to improve to 6-1 in conference play Thursday night.

Trailing 9-8 in the first set, the Broncos (15-4, 6-1 WCC) won four straight points — including an ace from Kirsten Mead and a kill from Sabrina Clayton — to force a Waves (12-8, 3-4) timeout. After Pepperdine won the first point out of the timeout, Santa Clara answered with a 6-0 run to take an 18-10 advantage. Clayton posted a kill and an ace and Anna McCreadie recorded a kill and combined with Lacey Maas for a block as part of the stretch.

Nikki Hess led all players with 15 kills while Clayton added 11 kills. Mead had 36 assists and WCC digs leader Danielle Rottman finished the night with 20 digs; Thursday marked her seventh consecutive match with at least 17 digs and sixth match on the season with at least 20 digs.

The Broncos posted a single-set high .355 hitting percentage for the match in the second frame. They fell behind early and won five of six points to take a 13-10 lead. Later in the set, the Broncos used another 5-1 run to extend their lead to 21-16. Hess finished off the set with one of her five second-stanza kills.

Coming out of the break, Sabrina Clayton's two aces keyed a 5-0 stretch to put the Broncos up 6-3 in the third set. The Waves rallied to pull within one point at 22-21 Broncos, and following a timeout, Santa Clara won three of the next four points to close out the match.

The Broncos continue their Southern California road trip Saturday with a 12 p.m. matchup at Loyola Marymount. The Lions (13-6, 4-3) swept San Francisco Thursday night.
