Volleyball Sweeps San Francisco Friday on the Road

SAN FRANCISCO – Santa Clara volleyball put together one of its most complete performances of the season Friday, sweeping San Francisco 25-18, 25-17, 25-16 on the road in West Coast Conference action.

Nikki Hess and Sabrina Clayton each tallied 10 kills for the Broncos (11-7, 2-4), who registered a .320 hitting percentage alongside only 11 attack errors — both total are second-best for the year.

Callie Jones had a match-high 31 assists, while Hess (nine) and Taylor Laugero (11) combined for 20 digs.

Santa Clara trailed briefly early in each set, but pulled away for its second-straight victory.

The Dons (4-15, 0-6) led 5-3 in the third set after a Hess attack error, but the Broncos reeled off nine of the next 10 points, capped by a Hess kill. USF never got closer than five points in the remainder of the set, with Santa Clara scoring the final five to secure the sweep.

The second set was even at 11-all before the Broncos took control with four straight points. Back-to-back kills from Hess and Hailey Lindberg were followed by a bad set and attack error from the Dons.

One of Tyna Adamcikova's match-high 13 kills cut the USF deficit to 16-13, but the Dons, who had only a .111 hitting percentage in the match, never got closer in the set.

The Broncos recorded a match-high .393 hitting percentage in the opening set when they scored four straight points to increase an 11-9 lead. Hess had a kill and the Broncos took advantage of two errors in the run. Santa Clara built the lead to 23-14 on a Clayton ace before Hess' kill closed out the set.

After playing 17 of their first 18 matches of the year away from home, the Broncos now enjoy eight of their final 12 regular season contests at Leavey Center. Next up, they host Loyola Marymount at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
