SAN JOSE, Calif. - The 17th-ranked Santa Clara volleyball team swept Sacramento State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament tonight at the Event Center. Game scores were 15-12, 15-10, 15-1.

The Broncos, now 27-4, advance to the second round for the second straight season and will face Long Beach State tomorrow night at 7 p.m. Sacramento State ends its year with a 21-12 overall mark. Tonight also marked the second victory for the Broncos over Sac State this season. In September, Santa Clara topped the Hornets in a four-game contest that lasted almost three hours.

Senior outside hitter Ynez Carrasco led all attackers with 18 kills while leading the defensive stats as well, with 17 digs. Senior middle blockers Brook Terhune and Amy Kohl added 10 kills.

Sacramento State was led by Jayme Wright and Tasman Dwyer, as each finished with seven kills.

The Hornets jumped out to a 6-2 lead to open the match, but an eight-point Bronco run gave the home team the advantage. Santa Clara earned its first game point up 14-8, but Sac State was able to off four game points while posting four more on their side of the scoreboard, before a Carrasco kill ended the frame.

Game two saw more side outs as the teams traded leads. The Broncos committed five service errors in this set before closing out a 15-10 victory.

The final game began with a 1-1 tie before the Broncos rattled of 14 straight points to advance to the second round.

Santa Clara, 2-4 all-time in the NCAA Championships, is making the program's fifth appearance in the postseason, and third straight. Although this is the first season the Broncos are hosting a sub-regional, due to reconstruction of SCU's Leavey Event Center, the matches are taking place at San Jose State University's Event Center.

The Beach defeated San Jose State in four games earlier this evening in other first-round action. The winner of the Bronco sub-regional will advance to the region final to face Hawaii (27-1), Davidson (24-11) or Utah (22-7). The semifinals and Championship matches will be contested at Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond, Va., Thursday and Saturday, Dec. 14 and 16.
