SCU Polo Sweeps in Monterey, Scoring 25 Goals, Winning Twice

MONTEREY, Calif. - Santa Clara University knew going into its three-game weekend the conference road game with Cal State Monterey Bay was its most important. The Broncos responded by limiting the Otters to six goals, including shutting out the home team in the fourth quarter to post an 8-6 victory, winning its first Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) game of the season in the process.

Later in the afternoon, SCU rolled past Fresno Pacific by a final of 17-8, to sweep its Saturday trip to Monterey's 'Otter Tank'. SCU had dropped a 16-6 decision to No. 11 Hawaii Friday afternoon, so being able to bounce back with a pair of road wins was much-needed. Senior goalkeeper Stephanie Clements (San Carlos, Calif. / Sacred Heart Prep) saved nine shots for the Broncos versus CSMB and on the offensive end, freshman Elizabeth Anderson (Palo Alto, Calif. / Gunn) put away four goals.

"The first game obviously was a big game for us," said Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur. "It was a conference game, there was a big home crowd, but we played well, grinded it out. There is no question their defensive scheme is something we do not see often, so we knew it would be low scoring. We really focused on playing good defense ourselves and holding them to six goals was key to the win."

Elizabeth and sister Jenny Anderson (Palo Alto, Calif. / Gunn), each enjoyed nice games against CSMB. Jenny distributed a pair of assists, as did Claire Eadington (Corona Del Mar / Corona Del Mar). Elizabeth drew a pair of kick outs and freshman classmate Elle Surber (Pleasanton, Calif. / Amador) also got credit with an assist.

Monterey had tied it up, 6-6, in the middle of the third quarter but standout freshman Julia Peters (San Jose, Calif. / Presentation) - pictured above - scored the go-ahead goal, then E. Anderson scored another to make it 8-6 heading into the fourth.

The whole team got involved in the second game against Fresno Pacific, but it was Ashleigh Bandimere (Carlsbad, Calif. / Carlsbad) scoring three times in the first half to spark the Broncos offense en route to the 17-goal performance collectively - a new season-high.

"In between games, we re-focused on Fresno," said Wilbur. "It was our last game of the weekend, so it was critical to come out strong, and with good energy. I think that showed with our defense, while our counter attack created a lot of offense."

The Broncos filled up the stat sheet against Fresno. SCU also used all three of its available goalies, with true-freshman Sydni Estrella (Huntington Beach, Calif. / Edison) saving a pair of shots in her collegiate debut.
