Eleven Different Broncos Score as Water Polo Sweeps Pair Saturday

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University's women's water polo team enjoyed an impressive day on the offensive end at the Sullivan Aquatic Center, as 11 different players scored during wins over Cal State Monterey Bay and Azusa Pacific. The win over CSMB upped the Broncos' Western Water Polo Association record to 3-2.

For the second time this season, Santa Clara (6-8; 3-2 WWPA) handled the unique defensive set up by Cal State Monterey Bay to beat the Otters in league play. Upperclassmen Jenny Anderson and Alison Norris netted two quick goals in the second quarter to allow SCU a 7-3 advantage by halftime.

"We prepared for it," said SCU head coach Keith Wilbur when asked about CSMB's defense, in which two players guard the net (the Broncos beat the Otters 8-6 on the road back on Feb. 2). "I thought we did well the first time and even better today the second time. We talked about different ways to execute, whether that be pushing the counter-attack, looking for goals in transition or just executing 6-on-5's."

The Broncos rolled against Azusa Pacific, reeling off seven unanswered goals in the first half en route to scoring 15 times - just two off their season high. Laura Burtness had a career-high three scores against Azusa and freshman standout Julia Peters put away four more.

"I'm really happy with direction we are headed," said Wibur about where his team is at midway through the season. "We started off (the year) playing tough competition in some tough tournaments, which affected our record. Since then, we've played in games we are capable of winning and came out on won them. It has not been easy, we are still playing good competition."

The Broncos will be looking to improve on their WWPA record next weekend when the team hosts Cal St. San Bernardino on Friday, March 1. Then SCU will play in the 2013 Aggie Shootout, where they will be tested against No. 14 UC Davis.
