Santa Clara Polo Once Again Nearly Upsets a Top-10 Opponent

2013 Triton Invitational Tournament Page

LA JOLLA, Calif. -
For the second time this season, Santa Clara University's women's water polo team gave a serious scare to a top 10 opponent. The Broncos scored four first-quarter goals against the 7th-ranked Aztecs of San Diego State Saturday, before eventually dropping a 12-9 decision in their opening game of the 2013 Triton Invitational.

In the afternoon session, No. 11 Michigan needed four goals in the fourth quarter to pull away and defeat Santa Clara 11-6. Scores at halftime of the two games were: SDSU 7, SCU 6 and UM 4, SCU 3.

No. 16 Hartwick is next for the Broncos in tournament play down in La Jolla. Hartwick lost one-goal games to both Cal State East Bay and CS Northridge on Saturday. Game time for the SCU-Hartwick matchup is set for 8 a.m. Sunday morning.

Southern California product Claire Eadington (Corona Del Mar / Corona Del Mar) - the 2011 Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Newcomer of the Year - was terrific for Santa Clara on Sarturday, scoring seven goals in the Broncos' two games. SCU has a number of San Diego-area players on its 2013 roster, playing in front of family and friends on the UCSD campus this weekend.
