DAVIS, Calif. - Rain at the Woody Wilson Open made for less than ideal conditions on the track, but the Broncos didn't let it get them down this past weekend. Danielle Miller and Stephen Koch each took second place in the 3000 meter steeplechase, while Adriane Puetz became just the second Bronco to break the 18-minute barrier in the women's 5k.
Puetz has continued to impress in 2007, and in Saturday's installment, she took second in the women's 5000 meters with a time of 17:53.59. Puetz was followed by senior Lauren Swigart, whose 18:07.89 performance was a career best. Also posting an impressive outing was Blossom Marimpietri, who finished in 18:49.33.
On the men's side, the Broncos were led by Alex Harkins, who took 13th in the men's 5000 meters with a time of 15:30.80, followed almost immediately by Chris Gumbs, who finished 15th at 15:16.12.
Switching gears, the Broncos barrier-harriers did well in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Danielle Miller took second for the women, running stride for stride with the eventual winner who ran a lifetime best 11:23, beating Miller's 11:43.29 by a mere 20 seconds. On the men's side, Stephen Koch also took second place with a time of 9:33.45, just over eight seconds behind the winner.
In the women's 1500, Veronica Vazquez took fifth with a time of 4:49.91. She didn't set any records this week, but she passed the spotlight onto freshman Shanthi Blanchard, who finished seventh in 4:51.01, a career best performance.
For the men, junior Mike Delaurenti took fifth place in the men's 1500 meter invitational with a time of 3:58.71, moving him into second place on the all-time Santa Clara leaderboard. The junior from Serra High School ran an agressive race against some very strong middle distance runners in one of the featured races. In the open race, the Broncos were led by senior Omar Ahmad, who finished seventh in 4:09.99.
The foursome of freshmen Tony Dipre and John Laughlin, Ryan Ward and Chris Furnari posted an impressive third place finish in the 4x400 meter relay, narrowly missing the second best time in school history with a final mark of 3:30.59.
Despite less than ideal conditions, the Broncos performed very well. The team will have a bye this week and begin preparations for the Steve Scott Invitational, hosted by UC Irvine, on April 28.
