Bronco Distance Squads Return To Action

    SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara men's and women's distance squads return to spring track and field action Saturday at the 23rd annual Johnny Mathis Invitational hosted by San Francisco State at Cox Stadium.

    The meet is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. with the last event scheduled to go off at 5:30 p.m. A total of 37 teams and over 600 athletes will be competing in the one-day event. Among the colleges competing besides the hosts, San Francisco State University, are Chico State, Cal State Stanislaus, Holy Names College, City College of San Francisco, San Jose Community College, UC Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa Junior College, Laney College, Sacramento City College, College of Sequoias, Loyola Marymount, Notre Dame de Namur, Cal State Hayward, Santa Clara, College of Marin, and Sonoma State.

    The meet will also feature a host of clubs and organizations. Those include West Valley Track Club, EOYDC, Buffalo Chips, V-Town Track Club, McDaniel Track Club, Van Dyke Track Club, Speed Zone Track Club, Golden Bear, Alfonso, Heritage Track Club, Sport Trend, Nike/McMullen, Gator Track Club, Impala's, Adidas Trans, Excelsior Running Club, Smith Track Club, Ken Grace Track Club, Humboldt Track Club, and the Aggies Running Club.

    The Bronco women will compete with Katie Hansen (800,1500), Robin Bell (5000), Jessica Baldwin-Philippi (5000), Blossom Marimpietri (5000), and Cara Payne (5000). The men's entries are Taylor Graham (1500), Chris Doerhoff (5000), John Paul Thyken (5000), Nick Arcelona (5000), Michael Neumann (5000), Omar Ahmad (5000) and John Hinman (5000).

    Katie Hansen is seeded 11th of 39 entries in the 1500-meters and Robin Bell is seeded third of 39 entries in the 5000-meters. The meet will also serve as freshman Taylor Graham's first competition since a stress fracture ended his cross country season in October.
