Bronco Harriers Complete Season at Regionals

    GRESHAM, Ore. -- Freshman Shannon Bell posted the highest regional finish ever for a Santa Clara University women's cross country runner as the Bronco women recorded a program-best 13th-place at the NCAA West Regionals Saturday at Blue Lake Park.

    The Bronco men, competing without the services of Ricky Brackett or Taylor Graham, finished 22nd overall. Senior Benjamin Gauen ran his final race as a Bronco, leading the squad with an 89th place finish and a 10,000-meter time of 32:04.

    Stanford University decisively won both the men's and women's titles, taking five of the top six spots in the men's race to defeat second-place Cal Poly by a 92-point margin of victory. WCC champion Portland finished sixth in the men's race.

    Bell, the younger sister of teammate Robin Bell, covered the 6,000-meter course in a time of 21:32 to finish in 32nd place overall. She finished just :04 seconds behind Portland's Ashlee Vincent, the West Coast Conference runner-up two weeks ago, while the Broncos battled to just one place behind the WCC champion Pilots in the team standings. WCC individual champion Tiffany Marley of San Diego finished in 52nd place.

    Junior Katie Hansen was the Broncos' second scorer, finishing the race in 56th-place with a time of 22:10. Freshman Lauren Swigart, SCU's top finisher at the league championships, was third for the Broncos with a 73rd-place time of 22:28. Fellow freshman Blossom Marimpietri was 96th in a time of 22:50, while Robin Bell finished 103rd overall in a time of 22:56 to round out the Bronco scoring.

    Senior Milena Basile completed her final race as a Bronco in 141st-place with a time of 23:30, while Cara Payne finished 159th in 23:56.

    The Bronco men finished one place behind the WCC's second-place finisher two weeks ago, Gonzaga, and ahead of Sacramento State, Pepperdine, San Diego and San Jose State in the team stadnings. Individually behind Gauen on the men's side was sophomore John Hinman, who finished the race in 108th, in a time of 32:34.

    Pat Green covered the course in a time of 33:23 to finish 132nd to finish third on the team. John Paul Thyken was 143rd overall with a time of 33:37, while Chris Doerhoff rounded-out the Bronco scoring with a 160th-place finish in 34:51. Michael Neumann finished 163rd in 35:17 and freshman Nick Arcelona was 166th in 35:33.
