OAKLAND, Calif. --The Santa Clara men's and women's cross country teams put on a clinic at the Holy Names Invitational Friday morning at Chabot Regional Park in Oakland, earning both the men's and women's team championships. The women were led by freshman Adrianne Beach, who in her second race of the season was the individual champion. On the men's team, it was sophomore Danny Smith who led the Broncos and finished in 2nd place.
Friday was the Broncos first ever trip to the Holy Names Invitational, and thanks to the mild Bay Area weather the course was in excellent condition. Excellent condition, that is, for a new course record to be set. Freshman Adrianne Beach established a new course record with her 5k time of 19:49, breaking the old course record of 20:04, set in October of 2004, by 15 seconds. And she was followed by teammates Becky Costigan (5th), Shanthi Blanchard (6th), Catherine Wallace (8th), and Alyssa Gagliani (9th) all finishing in the top ten in what was a solid team performance.
The men's team, not about to be outdone by their female teammates, also came away as team champions. Led by Danny Smith, who finished in 2nd place, the men's team saw strong individual performances from freshman John Laughlin (4th), senior veteran Nick Arcelona (5th), and track stars Ben Snyder (6th), Jay Cadwell (9th), and Vinod Kamath(11th).
And for the second straight week, the women's team debuted a new freshman, Catherine Wallace, who finished 8th.
Now, both the men's and women's teams have their eyes on their next competitions at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, September 29th, and the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, September 30th.
