Bronco Student-Athletes Post 3.0+ GPA for 12th time in 13 quarters

With almost one-third of the student-athletes posting a 3.5 or better, Santa Clara University's student-athletes posted a 3.047 grade point average (GPA) for the Winter 2011 quarter. Santa Clara's student-athletes have achieved a 3.0 GPA or better 12 of the last 13 quarters. Santa Clara's cumulative GPA for its student-athletes is 3.081.  For the second straight quarter, the women's cross country team (right) led all teams with a 3.406 GPA for the Winter 2011 term – the exact same GPA it recorded for the Fall 2010 term as well.

Individually, Santa Clara had 14 student-athletes achieve a perfect 4.0 GPA for the Winter 2011 quarter, 40 student-athletes posted a 3.8 GPA or higher and 104 posted a 3.5 GPA or higher. Fourteen Bronco programs posted a 3.0 GPA or better for the Winter 2011 quarter, with six teams posting a 3.2 GPA or better for the Winter 2011 quarter. In addition, 13 teams have a 3.0 GPA or better for their cumulative GPA - with all but one women's sport posting a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better. 

There are 81 Bronco student-athletes with a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average as well.

Those 14 teams who posted a 3.0 or better GPA for the Winter 2011 quarter include: men's cross country, men's crew, men's tennis, men's outdoor track, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's crew, women's golf, softball, women's soccer, women's tennis, women's outdoor track, women's water polo and volleyball.

"Congratulations to our student-athletes on another terrific quarter.  With the grade point average above 3.0 for 12 of the last 13 quarters, it shows a high level of consistency in our student-athletes dedication in the classroom.  In addition, I credit our coaches for fostering an atmosphere of academic achievement, and our Academic Support team of Jeff Mitchell, Zoe Segnitz and Jason Stock for all of their efforts," said Santa Clara Athletic Director Dan Coonan.

On the women's side, the cross country posted the highest GPA at 3.406 for the Winter 2011 quarter. They also had the highest cumulative GPA at 3.334.

On the men's side, the cross country team also posted the highest GPA at 3.306 for the Winter 2011 quarter for the second straight quarter. They also had the highest cumulative GPA at 3.295.

"Finding the right balance between academics and athletics while still being very involved in campus life can be a challenge for anyone. The fact that the cross country/track student-athletes can achieve excellence both in the class-room and in competition is a testament to the student-athletes that choose to be a part of our program. I am proud of their efforts and the team's emphasis on academic excellence," said Bronco head cross country and track coach Felipe Montoro.
