    Rising-junior catcher Anthony Martinez is playing his summer baseball in the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League for the Kauai Menehunes in Honolulu, Hawaii. Martinez has started five games for the Menehunes posting a .313 batting average (5-16). On Jun., 18 Martinez started for the Menehunes at first base tallying a RBI and a run scored in a 6-2 victory over the Hawaii Aliis.

    Three members of the Santa Clara baseball team were honored by the West Coast conference for their play this season on Wednesday. The three recipients were led by senior RHP Cory Hall, who was named to the 2011 All-West Coast Conference First Team. In addition, Patrick Terry was named as an All-WCC honorable mention and Kyle DeMerritt was named to the 2011 West Coast Conference All-Freshman Team.

    Santa Clara (17-33; 4-16 WCC) lost a tight 2-1 game to the Portland Pilots (23-30; 10-10 WCC). There was no scoring until the ninth inning when the Broncos scored a run but Portland was able to rally for two in the bottom of the inning. J.R. Graham (3-5) took the loss while pitching 8.2 innings and allowing two runs, on six hits and five walks with four strikeouts. Stephen Takahashi lead the offense with two hits and a RBI.

    Despite out-hitting Portland, Santa Clara dropped the series opener to Portland 5-3. Cory Hall (4-7) was tagged with the loss, while Kyle Kraus picked the win after pitching a complete game for the Pilots. Hall pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out three batters. Offensively, Santa Clara was led by Drew Ozanne who amassed two hits, a RBI and scored a run.

    The Broncos honored seven players in their final home game as a member of the Bronco baseball team and Santa Clara (17-31) lost its final home game of the season, falling to San Diego 16-6. San Diego used an eight-run fifth inning to put the Broncos out of reach. Brock Simon (3-8) picked up the loss for Santa Clara, while Paul Paez (7-4) got the win for San Diego. Both seniors in the lineup drove in runs in their final home game. Senior Day was highlighted by senior catcher Patrick Terry, who had a four-RBI performance including a two-run homer in his final game at Stephen Schott Stadium.

Graham (3-4) picked up the loss for the Broncos, while James Pazos picked up the win for the second consecutive day. Offensively, the Broncos’ day was highlighted by a five-run fifth inning.

Paul Twining (1-1) picked up the loss for the Broncos, allowing two runs on two hits in 2.1 innings. San Diego reliever James Pazos improved to 2-3 with the win. The Broncos scored two runs in the ninth, including a game-tying RBI single by Kyle DeMerritt. Offensively, the Broncos were led by Matt Ozanne who was 3-5 with a RBI, run scored and a stolen base. Starter Cory Hall pitched well for the Broncos, allowing three runs on nine hits and struck out six batters in seven innings of work.

Scott Chew improved to 1-0, pitching a complete game for the Aggies. J.R. Graham continued his dominance, pitching his sixth-straight perfect inning over his last three appearences.

Patrick Terry picked up two RBIs and Lucas Herbst had three hits to lead the offensive for Santa Clara. J.R. Graham (3-3) was dominant in the start for the Broncos. He pitched three innings without allowing a base runner and Paul Twining (1-0) pitched 4.2 shutout innings to pick up the win. Chris Mendoza picked up his first save of the season.

    Santa Clara (16-27; 3-11 WCC) dropped a 5-4 decision on Saturday in Malibu to the Pepperdine Waves (19-24; 5-6 WCC). Base runners were not a problem for the Broncos, as Santa Clara amassed 13 hits. Lucas Herbst led the Broncos by going 2-5 at the plate with a double and two RBI’s. Justin Viele collected three hits, while Stephen Takahashi, Pat Terry and Zach Looney both provided two. Curtis Wagner drove home a RBI on a single in the fourth. Brock Simon (3-7) pitched 6.1 innings and was charged with the loss.

With at least four games per week, the season offers adversity for every team and how they respond is key.
