Broncos Fall to Zags on Last Second Bucket

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - In a hard fought battle the entire night, Santa Clara's Jared Brownridge sank a 10-footer with 10 seconds left and Gonzaga's David Stockton scored with 1.4 seconds left to lift the Zags to a 77-75 victory in the West Coast Conference quarterfinals in Las Vegas.

Santa Clara ends its season at 14-19 and Gonzaga moves to 26-6.

Santa Clara shot 50.0 percent from the field (28 of 56), including 36.8 percent from beyond the arc (7 of 19).  The Broncos shot 80.0 percent from the free throw line (12 of 15).  They collected 23 rebounds, six steals, 13 assists, three blocks and had nine turnovers.

Brownridge led the Broncos with 24 points, including four threes. He finishes the year with 567 points, passing No. 10 Steve Nash (565, 1994-95) on the single season points scored list.  He made 95 threes on the year as well.

Brandon Clark scored 14 points with three assists and has scored double figures in 23 straight games.  The seniors came up strong for the Broncos: Evan Roquemore added 12 points and four rebounds in his final Bronco game; Jerry Brown scored nine points and had seven rebounds and John McArthur added eight points.

Gonzaga shot 53.3 percent from the field (24-45), including 18.2 percent from beyond the arc (2 of 11).  The Zags shot 81.8 percent from the free throw line (27 of 33).  They collected 32 rebounds, four steals, 10 assists, two blocks and had 16 turnovers. 

Sam Dower scored 23 for the Zags, including a perfect 15 of 15 from the free throw line.  Gary Bell, Jr. had 13 points and Przemek Karnowki scored 16 points with 12 boards.

The Zags opened the second half on a 5-2 run with Atanga scoring inside.  Clark sank a three at 18:22 on a sweet pass from Jalen Richard, 42-36 Broncos.

After Karnowski's three-point play, Clark scored again inside, 44-39 Broncos at 17:18.  Bell, Jr. scored inside and Dower dunked it to pull GU within one at 16:29, 44-43 Broncos.  Atanga answered inside at 15:57, 46-43 Broncos. 

Dower scored two pairs of free throws, sandwiched between a jumper by McArthur, to pull the Zags within one, but Brown muscled it in over Dower to put SCU back up by three at 13:20.  Brownridge sank a pair of free throws for his 20th point of the game at 13:00 to make the lead five, 52-47.

Brown scored inside again at 12:24, but Pangos answered with a three, 54-52 Broncos at 12:08.

Roquemore's three at 11:47 made it 57-52 Broncos.  Johnson scored inside after Bell, Jr. connected, 61-56 at 8:35. 

Dower made his third pair of free throws at 7:00, Broncos led by one, 61-58.  Clark answered with his own pair to give him double figures for the 23rd straight game at 6:39, 63-60 Broncos.  Dower sank his fourth pair of free throws in the second half to make the lead one again, 63-62 Broncos, at 5:56.

David Stockton scored inside to put Zags up 64-63 at 4:32.  Clark scored a jumper to put the Broncos back up by one, 65-64 at 4:10.

McArthur and Dower traded baskets with the Zags taking a 68-67 lead at 2:51.  Dower sank his fifth set of free throws in the second half and the Zags led by three at 1:46.

After a missed three by Clark, Brownridge fouled Dower and he sank his sixth set of free throws this half to make it 72-67 Zags.

Clark scored a lay-up at 1:24.  Kyle Dranginis scored inside and missed the free throw with 54 seconds left. 

Roquemore was fouled shooting by Dranginis and he missed the first free throw, but made the second to make the Zags lead four with 44.9 seconds left.

After Dranginis made a free throw, he missed the second and Roquemore was fouled shooting and converted the three-point play to pull SCU within two, 75-73 Zags. 

Bell, Jr. was called for traveling on the inbounds.  Brownridge sank a jumper to tie it up with nine seconds left, 75-75.  Stockton drove the lane and scored with 1.4 seconds left and the Zags won 77-75.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first half with the Broncos taking a 37-31 lead to the lockerroom at halftime.  Brownridge opened the game by sinking a pair of jumpers as Gonzaga took a 5-4 lead at 17:45 on a three-point play by Dower.

Brownridge's three put the Broncos up 7-5 at 17:05.  After Karnowski dunked it, McArthur's 15-foot jumper gave SCU a 9-8 lead at 15:53.

Brownridge hit a pair of baskets, including a three, between a three point play by Bell, Jr. and Brown blocked a shot and then scored inside to put SCU up 16-12 at 11:59.  Brownridge had a three at 9:01 to make it 19-15 Broncos. 

Coleman sank a pair of free throws and his basket inside gave the Zags a brief lead before Brown scored inside and Roquemore sank his first three, 26-23 Broncos at 5:00. 

Nunez dunked it at 4:41, but he picked up his third foul at 4:08 and Roquemore, the school's career free throw leader, sank both, 28-25 Broncos.

Clark sank his first bucket of the day at 1:51, 32-27 Broncos.  Brownridge sank his fourth three of the day at 1:25 from NBA-length and McArthur sank his second 15-footer to put SCU up 37-29 with 32 seconds left.  Bell, Jr. scored with two seconds left in the half and SCU led 37-31 at the half.
