Men's Crew Continues Winning Streak at Sacramento State Invitational

March 17, 2008

GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Men's Crew team continued with its undefeated season this weekend while racing in Sacramento. The Sacramento State Invitational on Saturday was held at Lake Natoma where conditions were fair with a moderate headwind on the race course.

The Men's Varsity 8 had another strong showing this weekend. They took a quick lead on the competition and didn't look back. They pushed through the finish line with a time of 6:19.9, followed by the California Lightweights, Sacramento State, Santa Clara Varsity B, and Humboldt State.

The Santa Clara Men have been changing up the lineups and have been trying different people in the Varsity 4 races. The Varsity 4 "A" heavyweight boat came in 3rd behind Humboldt State's time of 6:58 as well as a strong Sacramento State team taking 2nd. The team feels that even though they didn't come in first, they still had a strong showing and a good race.

This weekend was also the first weekend that the varsity team competed in the lightweight 4 event. The lightweight category means that the rowers must have a maximum weight of 165 lbs. and must have a boat average of 155 lbs. Despite having a rocky start, the lightweight 4 came in second behind California Lightweights and ahead of Sonoma State.

The Novice team has been training hard on the ergs during the past couple of weeks and has been posting some very promising times. They also showed great improvement from their previous week of racing. They came in second place with a time of 6:50.20 behind a very quick Sonoma State which equates to more than 20 seconds of improvement from the previous week. The Novice 4's also had a considerable improvement from the previous week of racing with a one second improvement in their time despite the moderate head and cross winds occurring throughout the day.

This week the Men's Crew team will be scrimmaging against USC who is here over their spring break. The crew team will also stay here over their spring break to train for the San Diego Crew Classic which takes place in Mission Bay April 5th and 6th.
