Men's Crew Has Impressive Showing at WIRA Championships

May 7, 2008

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Santa Clara men's crew team had tremendous success last weekend at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championship. The team had six boats make Grand Finals and was only two points away from getting first place in overall points. The team has not had such an impressive showing in years.

The times for the races were a bit on the slow side due to a continuous mild cross/head wind along the course. On Saturday, the men's team had five races, Varsity 8, Novice 8, Varsity 4, Novice 4 and a pair. The team had success in all of the Saturday races and all five of the boats were able to move onto the next round of racing. On Sunday, the team had further success in the grand finals.

The men's team believes that it still can get more speed and is hoping to show it this weekend in Philadelphia. The team is taking the Varsity 8 and the Novice 4 to the Dad Vail regatta and will be racing on Friday and Saturday. This is the second year in a row that the team will be going to Dad Vail and they hope to keep the momentum from WIRA's.
