Men's Water Polo Opens Season with a Victory

Sept. 13, 2003

REDLANDS, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's water polo team was led by its three captains, as the trio was responsible for all Bronco scoring in the season opening 8-3 victory over Division III 10th-ranked Chapman this morning. The match was part of the Inland Empire Classic, hosted by the University of Redlands.

"It was a good first game for us," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "We got some kinks out of our system, but we still have some improvements to make. However, it was a sound victory."

Dan Figoni led the way with four goals, while Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz tallied three and Logan Gee posted one. Peter Moore led the defense, notching seven saves in the cage, accompanied by one steal.

The Broncos earned a 3-1 halftime lead, and then sealed the victory by outscoring Chapman 4-0 in the third quarter.

One of the improvements Wilbur said he'd like his team to make was regarding kick outs.

"We gave Chapman 14 man-up opportunities and only created five of our own," he explained. "That adds up to a lot of opportunities for an opponent and we were lucky; despite the numbers being skewed, we were lucky to come away with the victory."

The Broncos remain at the Classic and will take on Division III seventh-ranked La Verne this afternoon at 4 p.m.
