REDLANDS, Calif. - Senior Dan Figoni scored four goals to lead the Santa Clara University men's water polo team to a 7-4 victory over Division III sixth-ranked La Verne this morning at the Inland Empire Classic, hosted by the University of Redlands. The Broncos are now 3-0 on the season.
"I think both teams were probably tired, as the season just started for us yesterday," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "I don't think we came out with as much energy as we usually do, but we grinded out the win anyhow."
In addition to Figoni's four scores, Whit Gilfillan notched two, while Kenny Flanagan-De La Hoz added one to complete the Bronco scoring. Gilfillen also drew two kickouts, something Wilbur said the Broncos were going to focus on today. Goaltender Peter Moore added eight saves.
"I'm glad we won three games this weekend, which was our goal, but our toughest game of the weekend is still ahead, against Redlands, and I can't wait to see how we do," he added.
The Broncos close out the weekend against its host, playing Division I No. 20 Redlands this afternoon at 2:45 p.m.
