Michael Wishart Breaks Santa Clara Blocks Record

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara University senior goalkeeper Michael Wishart now stands alone atop the Santa Clara all-time goalkeeper blocks list. In the Broncos' fifth and final game of the annual Rodeo Tournament on Sun., Oct. 23, a 13-4 win over Harvard, Wishart passed Peter Moore's career total of 1,063 blocks in the first half. Wishart currently sits at 1,066 with six regular season games and the WWPA Championships still to come.

Moore was a Bronco from 2001-05 and will be attending the Alumni Game on Sat., Oct. 29 at Noon. This will give the top two goalkeepers in Santa Clara men's water polo history a chance to meet for the first time.

"It is a great honor that I can always look back on after my water polo career ends," said Wishart. "I really owe it to my teammates and coaches whom I have had the privilege to play for. It is because of them that I have had a successful water polo career at SCU. Especially Coach Wilbur who has trusted me to be his goalie and has helped me to continuously improve these past four years."

"I have had the pleasure of coaching both Peter Moore and Michael Wishart and they are both outstanding goalies that did great things for our program," said Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur. "Although they have different styles in the cage, the trait they both share is a great work ethic. Michael has been our starting goalie since his freshman year and he is a leader by example. He always does extra in practice and he trains on his own in the off season more than any other player I have ever coached. He has great quickness, smart positioning and extremely strong legs that give him a big lunge and extra hang time. It is great to see hard work pay off like it has for Michael and given our history of excellent goalies at Santa Clara. It is a great accomplishment for him to set the career record for blocks."

Wishart leads Santa Clara back to the pool on Thu., Oct. 27 at 6 p.m. against No. 4 Cal at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.
