Women's Rowing Heads to Davis

Women's Rowing Heads to Davis

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Getting set to head into WIRAs and WCC Championships, Santa Clara women's rowing heads to Davis, Calif. to take on Saint Mary's and UC Davis on Sat., April 11. There will be three races; Varsity 8, JV 8, and Varsity 4.

"We've changed the lineup around a little bit since our last race," said Santa Clara head coach John Wojtkiewicz. "We put Kelby Nardoni '18 at stroke switching her with Megan Alferness '14 who is now in six. It is always a bit of a gamble putting a freshmen in that seat, but she has come a long way in her rhythm and consistency since she joined the team in the fall. I've juggled the starboard side around a fair amount as well to find the right combination of power distribution and balance."

It has been a month since the Broncos raced so they have had plenty of time to work on different aspects of their races. One of the most important things for Santa Clara is to focus on what they can control and not worry about the other crews.

"For the last two weeks going into this race, we've been talking about staying inside the boat, executing our own piece, putting out a superlative performance without focusing or even thinking about the other crews," said Wojtkiewicz. "We have the framework of a race plan that we want to hone and perfect for WCCs, so this is our first opportunity to test it out and see what works and what we need to throw out. I'd like to see us execute that plan in a very offensive way, keeping our focus inside the boat and not allowing the other crews to distract us or make us row defensively. This will be our crew, our race, our piece. The other crews are irrelevant."

The most important thing for Wojtkiewicz is that the team executes its plan and does everything in its power to race as well as possible.

"Like I said we're focused inward, on executing our race plan without any distractions," continued Wojtkiewicz. "We want to come off the water feeling like it was a superlative performance for our crew and we stuck to the race plan."
