SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's rowing competed against Saint Mary's, Mills, and Humboldt over the weekend. The Broncos were unable to come away with any wins but got some good performances.
Against Saint Mary's, traditionally a strong crew, the Broncos were able to improve on previous times against the Gaels and shave seconds off the differential.
"Both first and second eights were able to put up good pieces against Saint Mary's," Santa Clara head coach John Wojtkiewicz said. "Both crews put down season best times and were able to close on previous margins against St. Mary's. It was good to finish the day with a win against Mills but both crews felt their recovery wasn't adequate, so their pieces weren't as strong as they hoped."
Complications arose on Sunday morning for Santa Clara and the Broncos had to deal with adversity in their race against Humboldt. It showed in the time but Wojtkiewicz wants to use it as a way to improve.
"Sunday morning against Humboldt, the recovery piece played a strong role in sub-optimal races for both crews," Wojtkiewicz said. "The varsity eight caught a boat-stopping crab at the 1000 meter mark which added seconds on to their time but the crew reported that the race wasn't going well for them already. In addition we had one rower competing with a nasty flu bug which is hard to shake on your third race of the weekend."
Santa Clara now heads to the WIRA championships April 30-May 1. The Broncos will look to use what they learned this weekend to improve showings.
"All crews were happy with their performances Saturday morning as an indication of what they are capable of," Wojtkiewicz said. "We will spend the next two weeks training and refining to try and pick up more speed going into WIRAs, as well as coming up with a recovery strategy that will make sure we put out two great races that weekend."
