SEASIDE, Calif. - Santa Clara University's women's golf team began its 2001-2002 season on Monday at the CSU Monterey Bay Lady Otter Invitational. The Broncos joined six other schools to compete on the Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, Calif.
Day one of the tournament concluded with the University of British Columbia holding a four-stroke advantage over the host, CSU Monterey Bay, and a 11-stroke advantage over Santa Clara.
The Broncos finished the first round with a team score of 353, led by freshman Anne Bowden's 81, and freshman Jessica Lamberty's 87. Bowden sits in second place overall while Lamberty is tied for seventh place in the individual standings.
Santa Clara head coach Polly Schulze sent out five freshmen for the first tournament of the season and was proud of the way her team competed without any practice rounds. "I was happy and proud of how they competed on a tough course that had long rough and played about two clubs longer than normal today," said Schulze. "They all had some first collegiate tournament jitters, but they worked through it. I took it as a good sign that the girls were not happy with their scores today and wanted to go out and do better tomorrow."
The second and final round of the Lady Otter Invitational will take place tomorrow morning at the Black Horse Course.
