MORAGA, Calif. - The 12th-ranked Santa Clara women's soccer team picked up its first West Coast Conference win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif. on Friday afternoon. With the win, Santa Clara improves to 8-4-2 on the season, 1-1-0 in conference play.

"Today's win was a complete team effort," head coach Jerry Smith said. "We used more subs today than I think we have used all season. I am very happy so many players could contribute to the victory."

Bronco forward Bree Horvath scored the first goal of the match in the 26th minute to give SCU a 1-0 advantage. Tina Estrada's pass split the Gael defense as Horvath ran across the top of the penalty box, scoring from the far post. The goal was Horvath's third of the season, while the assist was Estrada's third as well.

Early in the second half, SCU would take a 2-0 lead as the Gael defense knocked a ball into its own goal. Bronco forward Megan Kakadelas was attempting a cross before a SMC defender re-directed the cross into the back of the net in the 50th minute.

The Gael's would bring the lead back down to one goal less than 10 minutes later when Katie Fagundes scored from the left side. The SCU defense would shut down the SMC attack to close out the match and record its eighth win on the year.

SCU created a wealth of scoring opportunities through out the contest, out-shooting Saint Mary's 16-5. In the first half, the Broncos posted nine shots, including three on goal, while holding the Gaels to one.

Bronco goalkeeper Julie Ryder tallied two saves in the contest, both coming in the second half of play.

16 different Broncos saw action in the contest. The SCU reserves provided valuable minutes and opportunities, as six shots came from non-starters.

The Broncos will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to San Francisco for a 1:00 p.m. WCC match at Negoesco Stadium.
