Final Stats

STANFORD, Calif. - The 2007 Santa Clara women's soccer season was brought to a close Friday night as No. 16 SCU fell 2-0 to No. 16 Cal at Cagan Stadium in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. With the win, the Bears advance to the second round, while the Broncos finish the season at 12-6-3.

Neither team took a shot for the first 15 minutes of the game, though Santa Clara controlled most of the action. With about four minutes left in the first half, Courtney Lewis' header almost gave the Broncos the first point of the game, but the Bears goalkeeper Gina Pellegrini punched the ball over the cross bar to keep the score 0-0. However, just about a minute later, Nikki Schrey came off the bench for Cal to register the eventual game-winning goal as she received the ball from Katie Oakes and shot it from 15 years past Meagan McCray. It was Schrey's second goal of the season against the Broncos.

The battle continued in the second half as Santa Clara tried to knot the score. The Broncos first attempt at equalizing the score came when sophomore Kiki Bosio took a hard shot in the 56th minute that ended up in Pellegrini's hands.

The Bears continued to apply pressure on the Broncos defense and in the 72nd minute, Cal scored its second and final goal of the game as McKenna-Louise McKetty dribbled around the charging McCray and shot the ball inside the left post past a Bronco defender on the goal line.

Lewis once again tried to put Santa Clara on the scoreboard with SCU's final shot on goal in the 75th minute but the ball narrowly escaped the goal as it bounced off the right post.
