Santa Clara Beats USF 5-0

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara women's soccer (9-1-5; 2-0-1 WCC) defeated San Francisco (5-10-0; 2-2-0  WCC) by a score of 5-0 for its second conference win of the season. Sofia Huerta led the way with two goals and Julie Johnston had two assists as well as a goal.

"It's always good, especially coming off a game where we had a lot of chances and didn't score, to put up five goals," said Bronco head coach Jerry Smith. "I'm really happy with the fact that we scored multiple goals and I'm always happy with a shutout. It's important to us that we don't get a few goals and start to lay back and allow a silly goal. I'm also always happy when all of the eligible players get on the field and we played everyone that is healthy enough to play. I feel that we are in a good spot for the stage of the season we are in and we're prepared to continue to play well and have a chance at the conference championship."

In the 11th minute Olivia Klei put a nice move on a USF defender and centered the ball to Johnston who took a shot that Celia Pellegrini laid out for and made a finger-tip save.

The Broncos scored first in the 16th minute off the foot of Margueritte Aozasa. Meleana Shim centered the ball to Aozasa who fired a shot from the top of the box that the goalkeeper got her hands on but the ball popped out and landed just beyond the goal line to put Santa Clara up by a score of 1-0.

In the 18th minute Santa Clara struck again. Aozasa sent a ball to Lauren Matheson on the wing who centered the ball to Johnston right outside the goal and she knocked it past the goalkeeper for her team-leading eighth goal of the season. The score put Santa Clara up 2-0.

Huerta continued her incredible month with a goal in the 29th minute. She took a pass from Johnston at the 18-yeard box and rocketed a shot past the goalkeeper. The goal was the sixth for Huerta which puts her at second on the team.

Huerta and Johnston hooked up again in the 39th minute to make the score 4-0 in favor of Santa Clara. Johnston left a short pass over the center of the box and Huerta knocked the ball into the back of the net for her second goal of the game and seventh in the last four games.

The second half had many fewer scoring chances for the Broncos. As the half progressed Santa Clara took out most of its regulars in favor of the reserves. Freshman Kat McAullife took a pass from Cate Parchinski near the top-left of the box and fired a shot that put the Broncos up 5-0, where the game would end.

Santa Clara returns to the field on Fri., Oct. 21 at Portland at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU. The weekend will wrap-up with a game at Gonzaga on Sun., Oct. 23 at 1 p.m.
