Becky Potter Named First Team All-Pacific Region

Dec. 11, 2002

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Becky Potter added another piece of hardware to her trophy case Wednesday morning as she was selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association first team All-Pacific Region.

The junior from Clovis, Calif., posted one of the best single-season performances in Bronco Volleyball history in 2002, setting a new single-season record for kills with 571 and kills per game with her 5.34 average. Her .338 hitting percentage is the third highest single-season mark in program history while her 1,192 attack attempts ranks sixth.

"Her numbers this year stack up against the best in the country and I think any coach would feel lucky to have Becky Potter on their team. I know I do."
Head Coach Jon Wallace

"No one deserves this award more than she does," said head coach Jon Wallace. "What she has meant to this team and this program goes beyond words. Her numbers this year stack up against the best in the country and I think any coach would feel lucky to have Becky Potter on their team. I know I do."

In addition to the first team All-Pacific Region award Potter also garnered first team All-WCC honors, three WCC player of the week nods and WCC player of the month honors in September. She also earned tournament MVP status at the UC Irvine/Marriott Sunset Showcase and the Northern Arizona Fiesta Bowl Classic while earning all-tournament honors at the U.S. Bank/Arby's Classic hosted by Nebraska and the Denver Invitational.

In addition to all of the individual accolades, Potter helped the Broncos to their fifth straight NCAA Tournament appearances and the third most wins in program history. Their 24-7 overall record gave the Broncos a .774 winning percentage, the second highest in program history. She also helped the Broncos to a program best national ranking of No. 11 on November 4.

She currently ranks fifth in career kills at Santa Clara with 1,272 while her 741 career digs leaves her only 259 digs shy of becoming only the sixth player in program history to reach 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in a career. Her career 4.28 kills per game average ranks second in program history with her .283 career hitting percentage ranking her fourth in program history.

The All-Pacific Region honor is the first of its kind for Potter and only the second in program history as she joins Ynez Carrasco as the only two players to be named to the AVCA All-Region team. Carrasco earned the honor in 2000, Potter's freshman year.
