No. 19 Volleyball Remains Perfect on Season by Sweeping Grand Canyon

BERKELEY, Calif. - The 19th-ranked Santa Clara volleyball team remained perfect on the season by sweeping Grand Canyon 25-17, 25-19, 26-24 Friday at the Cal Classic.

Hailey Lindberg had a team-best 11 kills while Nikki Hess and Sabrina Clayton posted eight apiece for the Broncos (7-0). Callie Jones had game highs in assists (29) and digs (13).

Katrice Pond had a game-best 13 kills and Heidi Carpenter tallied 23 assists for Grand Canyon (4-3), which had won four of its last five matches.

After rolling in the opening set, the Broncos had to rally in both the second and third.

Four kills by Lindberg helped erase a 17-11 lead for the Antelopes in the third set. The Broncos tied the set at 20-all on a kill by Taylor Odom, but Grand Canyon reeled off the next three points. From there, the Broncos took advantage of five attack errors to close out the match.

There were four lead changes in the second set before the Broncos took control. The Antelopes led 17-16, but Santa Clara claimed the next six points, five coming off attack errors. Back-to-back kills from Lindberg and Clayton closed out the set.

The Broncos, who have equaled their best start in school history (also 2005), play a pair of matches Saturday at Haas Pavilion. They face West Virginia at 12:30 p.m. and the host Cal Bears at 7:30 p.m.
