SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team closed out its home schedule in a big way as it posted an 8-6 win over Sonoma State this afternoon at Leavey Pool. The Broncos will now head into the WWPA Championships with a 17-15 record. The Seawolves fall to 22-16 on the season.
The teams traded goals in the first period as they headed into the second quarter tied 2-2. The Seawolves scored the first goal of the second quarter, but the lead would be short-lived. SCU rattled off three straight unanswered goals to take a 5-3 advantage at the half.
In the second half, the Broncos stretched their lead to four goals as Kathleen Hamm and Catherine Flynn scored the first two goals of the third quarter. The lead would prove to be enough as SCU kept at least a two-goal margin through out the rest of the match.
Flynn led all scorers with four goals in her final match at Leavey Pool, while Hamm posted a hat trick. Emily Bonk also found the back of the net for SCU. Goalkeeper Kristin Barnes recorded five saves in the contest.
Prior to the contest, the program honored its two seniors, Flynn and Erin Scollin. Both have been two-year members of the women's water polo team and helped the Broncos earn their first national ranking in program history.
The Broncos will travel to Davis, Calif. for the WWPA Championships on Friday, April 29. The tournament will last through the weekend on the campus of UC Davis.
