Taylor Harkins Shatters Scoring Record in 13-10 Win Over Colorado State

Roadrunner Invitational II Tournament Central

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. –
Santa Clara University's women's water polo team scored 13 times, beating Colorado State at the Roadrunner Invitational II in Bakersfield Sunday, and is positioned to be one of the top seeds at the upcoming Western Water Polo Association Championship tournament.

Senior Taylor Harkins (Newport Beach, Calif./Corona del Mar) broke Santa Clara's career goal-scoring record in the process, netting six goals in the win to eclipse Catherine Flynn's '05 all-time mark of 161.

Building on Saturday's 11-5 win over Cal State East Bay, goals by Harkins, Claire Eadington and Laura Espinosa in the first half gave Santa Clara an early lead. SCU would never trail, winning 13-10.

"It was a good game, it was really physical, but we handled it pretty well," said Santa Clara head coach Keith Wilbur. "Our six-on-five was really strong, Taylor was getting good looks and hitting her shots."

The Broncos offense caught fire in the second half, with Harkins scoring four more times to bring her season-total to 49. As a team SCU scored 24 times in the final two games at the tournament, finishing 2-1 on the weekend and improving their overall record to 13-17 and 10-6 in the WWPA.

"It is a good win to finish our conference schedule, beating two of the better teams in the league," said Wilbur. "Next week we play Davis, a top 20 team on senior day so that should be fun."

Come out and support the Broncos next Saturday at 1 p.m. versus UC Davis at SCU's Sullivan Aquatic Center.
