SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Jerome Gumbs scored 22 points and Alan Wiggins had 14 points and matched his career high with 13 rebounds to help San Francisco beat Santa Clara 72-64 on Saturday night.

Armando Surratt scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half as the Dons (8-11, 4-2 West Coast Conference) won for just the second time on the road this season. Danny Cavic made four of six 3-pointers and finished with 12 points.

Travis Niesen scored 13 points to lead the Broncos (8-10, 1-5), who lost their fifth straight, and fell to San Francisco for the fourth straight time during the regular season. John Bryant added 11 points.

Gumbs recorded his second best offensive night of the season, and his best since scoring 31 against Texas Tech on Dec. 3. He made six of his first seven shots.

Niesen's short jumper less than five minutes into the second half knotted the score at 44. Neither team led by more than three the rest of the way, trading the lead eight times, until the Dons made five free throws in the final 26 seconds for the final margin.

Surratt's 3-pointer with 4:53 remaining gave San Francisco the lead for good at 63-60.

With just under 3 minutes to play, Wiggins tried to save a loose ball out of bounds but ended up knocking over a couple of courtside seats and their occupants.

After nine lead changes in the first 10 minutes, San Francisco maintained a slim lead the rest of the first half. Freshman Drew Schiller hit a 3-pointer near the end of the half and the Dons took a 37-30 lead at the break.

Santa Clara honored its 1967-70 teams, which produced three NBA players in Dennis Awtrey, Bud Ogden and Ralph Ogden and was ranked as high as second in the nation, during halftime.

San Francisco is in the midst of celebrating the 50th anniversary of its 60-game winning streak, which lasted through Dec. 30, 1956. Only UCLA's 88-game streak from 1971-74 is longer.
