SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Santa Clara University men's basketball signee Calvin Johnson was selected to play in the annual Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Game, scheduled for July 25 at Greehey Arena on the St. Mary's University Campus.
Johnson, a 6-4 guard from Morton, Texas, signed with Santa Clara during the early signing period in November. He will play for Brownwood (Texas) head basketball coach Shane Perkins' North squad. The game will be televised by Fox Sports Southwest beginning at 6:30 p.m. (Pacific).
A two-time all-state selection, Johnson also played in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Class A-AAA All-Star Game during the spring and was named the game's MVP after leading all scorers with 24 points.
Johnson averaged 22.6 points, 9.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 4.2 steals per game and shot over 83 percent from the free throw line as a senior and led the Indians to a 30-5 record, the Class 1A Division I state title and a victory in the Texas Cup against the state Division II champion under coach Gant Caraway.
He was also an outstanding football player, earning second-team all-state honors as a defensive back and was a third-team selection as a quarterback as a senior.
One of five new players on the Bronco squad, Johnson will most likely be counted upon to make an immediate contribution at the guard position. Santa Clara lost its starting backcourt with the graduation of Doron Perkins and Kyle Bailey, who averaged 15.4 and 14.8 point per game respectively.
