Men's Rowing Starts Strong but Fades Late at Stanford Invitational

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. – Santa Clara men's rowing competed at the Stanford Invitational Friday and Saturday with a victory over San Diego on Friday but losses to Oregon State, Cal and Stanford.

"The races this weekend were a good wake up call for our team," Santa Clara head coach Jay Farwell said. "We have had some early success the season and I thought overall the weekend was a humbling reminder that there is a great deal of work left to be done. Our races against USD were competitive and I thought USD did a good job of closing the gap against us. We will see them again in a month at Western Sprints (IRA qualifier)."

The Broncos were able to go stroke for stroke with Oregon State through the first half of their race but ran out of gas when it came time to counter a move made by the Beavers.

"Although we lost the race, I think the guys know that they can compete at this level," Farwell said. "I can't recall any time in recent memory when we have given OSU a push like this. Our 2nd Varsity also had a very competitive race against OSU further demonstrating our developing depth on the team. The 2nd Varsity is a very young crew with a number of freshmen and sophomores who continue to improve and gain speed. It was a solid race for these guys against a very good OSU crew."

On Saturday afternoon Santa Clara squared-off with a pair of boats from Cal, a fast crew. The Broncos again put forth a strong effort but were overpowered in the last half of the races.

"We clearly have some work to do as we approach the later half of the season," Farwell said. "Overall we were able to get a number of high quality races in over a very short period of time. Three races in less than 24 hours is a great test for the guys and we expect them to come away from this weekend with some additional perspective on the quality and volume of work ahead. We will be ready for the championship phase of the season which starts with WIRA in two weeks."

The Broncos return to the water April 29-30 at the WIRA Championships at Lake Natoma.
