Men's Golf Completes First Day of Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team completed the first 36 holes of the 57th Annual Western Intercollegiate Golf Tournament hosted by San Jose State at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif. The Broncos posted team scores of 309 and 305 and sit in 17th place after the first day.

Junior Justin Ahasic paced the Broncos with a 76 in the first round and a 3-under par, 69 in round two, and sits in a tie for 21st at 5-over par. Blake Lugar was the next highest Bronco with his two-round total of 15-over par, 155, after rounds of 76 and 79 which place him in a tie for 69th heading into day two.

Matt Klenz fired rounds of 77 and 79 to finish the day in a tie for 72nd place at 16-over par. His two round total of 156 is three shots better that teammate Michael Nicoletti who is tied for 81st after rounds of 79 and 80. Jonathan Edwards rounded out the Bronco scoring with his day one total of 162 which places him in 87th place heading into Tuesday's final round.

UCLA is the team leader after day one with their team total of 3-over par score of 563. Dan Swanson of UTEP and Steve Conway of UCLA are the individual leaders heading into day two with their two-round total of 1-under par, 169 at the 6,445-yard Alistair Mackenzie designed course.

The third and final round will begin at 8 a.m. Monday morning in Santa Cruz.
