Men's Golf Wraps Up Play at Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's golf team concluded play at the 57th Annual Western Intercollegiate Golf Tournament hosted by San Jose State at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif., Tuesday afternoon.

The Broncos fired a final round 301 as a team, placing them in 17th place out of 18th teams with a three-round total of 915. UCLA won the team title with their three round total of 855, seven strokes better than UC Irvine. San Jose State picked up three rivalry series points over Santa Clara as they finished 28 strokes ahead of the Broncos.

Justin Ahasic was the bright spot for Santa Clara as he fought back from an opening-round 76 to card consecutive rounds of 69 to finish the tournament in a tie for 10th place with his 4-over par score of 214. Steve Conway of UCLA took home Medalist honors with his 2-under par score of 208, followed by Matt Hansen of Pacific who finished the tournament at 1-under par.

Blake Lugar and Matt Klenz each fired final round 76's, moving Lugar into a tie for 68th for the tournament with his 231 two-day total. Klenz finished in a tie for 72nd at 22-over par, just one stroke behind Lugar.

Michael Nicoletti finished the tournament in a tie for 84th place with his three round total of 3-over par, 240, after shooting an 81 on Tuesday. Jonathan Edwards carded an 80 on Tuesday but could only manage a tie for 86th with his 54-hole total of 242.

Santa Clara returns to action next weekend in Fresno, Calif., as they participate in the annual West Coast Conference Championships. Following the WCC Championships the Broncos will wrap up their season at the U.S. Intercollegiate hosted by Stanford on April 19-20.
