STOCKTON, Calif. – In a scary show of consistency the Santa Clara men's golf team was treated to four individual even-par rounds leading to a team even-par total and a second-place tie after the first round of the SCVB Pacific Invitational played today at the Stockton Golf & Country Club.
Sophomores Carlos Briones and Gio Gandionco, senior Scott Lowe, and freshman Evan McLeod all carded an even-par round of 71 and are tied for 13th place, six shots behind first-round leader Joe Parkinson of BYU. Freshman Tyler Kertson wasn't far behind his Bronco teammates with a 2-over-par 73 after the first 18 holes.
Santa Clara's even-par team total of 284 is the second-lowest round of the season and leaves them in a tie with Charlotte and UC Davis for second place, seven shots behind leader BYU, but just two shots ahead of Nevada. It's the fourth time this season the Broncos have recorded a team score below 290.
Lowe, who has been one of the most consistent performers for the Broncos this season, shot a season-low round and McLeod matched his season-low performance, which was accomplished three other times. Briones has been at or below par in each of his last four rounds and in five of his last six.
Gandionco recorded his lowest first-round score of the season and chopped seven shots off his first round season scoring average.
The Broncos will begin Tuesday's second round from the 10th tee starting at 8:50 a.m. (PDT). They will play in groups of three with members of Long Beach State and Army. Live stats will be available at www.golfstatresults.com.
