Miller Leads Men’s Golf to Fifth Place After First Day of Play

PULLMAN, Wash. – Sophomore Drew Miller fired a second round 4-under-par 66 to lift the Santa Clara men's golf team into fifth place after the first day of play in the Washington State Itani Quality Homes Collegiate at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club on Monday. Twelve teams and 81 golfers played 36 holes today with the final 18 holes to be played on Tuesday.

With his finest round as a collegiate golfer, Miller sits in sixth place just two strokes behind co-leaders Cody Blick of San Jose State and Blake Snyder of Washington State. Miller totaled six birdies over the second 18 holes and ended with the second-best score of the day. He shot a 1-over-par 71 in the first round to finish the first 36 holes with a 3-under 137.

Senior Bobby Monaco had the best first round score of the seven Broncos competing firing an even-par 70. He reached par on 16 holes, including the final 12 of the round. He double-bogeyed the final hole in round two to finish with a one-over 71 and is tied for 19th place heading into the final round.

Freshman Tyler Kerston, playing as an individual in his first collegiate tournament, shot a 72 and 71 ending the day tied for 26th with a 3-over 143.

As a team the Broncos shot an even-par 280 in the second round, the team's best score since a 278 in the final round of the Pacific Invitational on November 3, 2010. They were 9-over in the first round and trail tournament leader and host Washington State by 17 strokes. The Broncos are just four strokes behind Sacramento State for third place, a goal Coach Rob Miller feels his team can reach.

Final round action is set to begin Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. PST. Live stats for the third round can be followed at www.golfstat.com.
