SONOMA, Calif. – Sophomore Carlos Briones fired two sub-par rounds leading the Santa Clara men's golf team to 36-hole total of 14-over-par 590 after the first day of competition at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational played today at the Sonoma Golf Club.

The 16-team tournament field is one of the toughest for Santa Clara this fall season with 11 of the 16 squads ranked in the top-100 of the latest Golfweek.com rankings and California (4th), Arizona State (23rd), Brigham Young (45th), and Oregon State (48th) all in the top-50.

As a team the Broncos shot a first round 298 and completed the afternoon's second round with a 292 leaving them just nine strokes behind 10th place Colorado State. The Broncos have scored nine rounds below 300 already this season in four events after carding 11 sub-300 rounds all of last season.

With a 36-hole total of 541 (-35), Cal holds a 21-shot lead over Oregon and Arizona State (562) heading into Tuesday's final round. Cal also has the top three finishers on the individual leaderboard with Joel Stalter at 11-under 133 one shot ahead of teammates Brandon Hagy and Pace Johnson.

Briones tallied four straight birdies towards the end of the first 18 holes and finished the round with a 3-under 69. It was a season-low score and the second-lowest score of his career. He completed the day's second round with a 1-under 71 to close the first day of action tied for 12th at 4-under (140).

Freshman Tyler Kertson shot rounds of 76 and 73 and senior Scott Lowe scored a 74 and 75 to tie for 62nd place at 5-over 149.

Bobby Monaco shot a second round 1-over 73 after a first round 79 to tie for 69th with a 152 total and Evan McLeod scored identical rounds of 79 for a 158 total.

Tuesday's final round will tee off from the first and 10th holes at 8:00 a.m. Santa Clara will start from the 10th tee box and play in five foursomes with one player each from San Jose State, Pepperdine and Hawaii. Live scoring will be provided by golfstat.com with complete results posted at the conclusion of the event.
