Men’s Golf 8 Shots Out of Second Place After Strong Round At Cabo del Sol

CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – All six Santa Clara men's golfers bested their first round scores leading the team to a 20-shot improvement in round two of the inaugural Cabo del Sol Intercollegiate played today in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The Broncos find themselves eight shots out of second place heading into Tuesday's third and final round.

After struggling to a first round 310, the Broncos picked it up over the middle 18 holes behind a 2-under-par 70 from senior Bobby Monaco and a 1-under 71 from freshman Evan McLeod to complete the round with a 2-over 290, the fifth-best total of the day among the 11 competing teams.

Santa Clara's West Coast Conference foe San Francisco paces the field with a 3-over 579, 13 strokes better than UC Irvine and Towson, who are tied for second at 592 (+16). Only nine shots separate the eight teams from second to ninth place in the standings.

McLeod carded the first sub-par round of his career and matched his best score with today's 71. After a first round 75, McLeod sits in a tie for fifth place at 2-over (146). Monaco is tied for 11th place with his 3-over 147 after equaling his best round of the season and third-best of his career with today's 70.

Freshman Tyler Kertson shot an even-par 72 in today's second round after a 77 yesterday. He moved into a 17th place tie with a 5-over 149.

With a 6-under-par 138, USF's Jobim Carlos tops the leaderboard by five strokes over Weber State's Michael Johnson.

Gio Gandionco and Drew Miller each had a 5-shot improvement from their first day scores while Scott Lowe bettered his first round score by three shots helping the Broncos to their fourth-best team score of the season.

Tuesday's final round tees off from Cabo del Sol's Ocean Course with a shotgun start at 6:30 a.m. (PDT).
