Despite Impressive Performance by McCarty at NCAA Regional Men's Golf Season Ends

CLE ELUM, Wash. - Matt McCarty of Santa Clara men's golf battled to the end in his final collegiate appearance.

McCarty fired a 3-under-par 210 to finish in a tie for sixth place at the NCAA Cle Elum Regional, missing out on a trip to the championship final by three strokes.

Only the top individual not on one of the five advancing teams out of the regional earns a berth to the final.

Tristan Mandur of Utah secured that spot with a 6-under 207. He finished roughly 90 minutes ahead of McCarty who shot a 2-under 69 in Wednesday's final round. McCarty closed within two shots with birdie on the par-5 15th but went par-par-bogey on the final three holes.

"I couldn't be more proud of Matt and the way he battled this week," Santa Clara head coach Andrew Larkin said of the three-time All-West Coast Conference performer. "He gave himself a chance to advance and just ran out of holes. He wrapped up one of the best careers in Santa Clara history and has an incredibly bright future ahead of him as a pro."

East Tennessee State won the regional with a 14-under total of 838. San Francisco, Wake Forest, Pepperdine and Florida will join the Buccaneers at the final which will be held May 28-June 2 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Shiso Go of East Tennessee St. was the top individual at 8-under 205.

McCarty's exit ends the season for the Broncos, the first under Larkin.

"I was a great first season to be a part of the Santa Clara family," Larkin said. "I think the program progressed forward and set a foundation to build on for the years to come. We have a lot to accomplish and it will take a new level of work but the foundation is in place to make this one of the best programs in the country."
