Men's Soccer Announces 2002 Schedule

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's soccer team announced its 2002 schedule Monday, revealing nine matches at Buck Shaw Stadium and eight away from the Mission Campus. Eight of the 17 matches will be against team that reached the NCAA Tournament in 2001. The eight teams from the tournament include California, Portland, Gonzaga, Harvard, Loyola Marymount, San Diego, Stanford and Washington.

The Broncos will open their first season under new coach Cameron Rast at home against Notre Dame de Namur n September 2. The season opener, like all 2002 home matches, will take place at 7:30 p.m.

Santa Clara will begin their road season just four days later when they take on the 2001 NCAA Tournament participant, University of Washington, on September 6 at 7 p.m. in Seattle, Wash.

The Broncos will return to Buck Shaw for four matches beginning with Alabama A&M on September 14th. They will take on San Jose State and Cal State Fullerton in the Santa Clara/adidas Classic on the 19th and 21st before battling with California on September 26.

After a meeting with South Bay rival and 2001 College Cup Participant Stanford in Palo Alto on September 29, the Broncos will take on two Ivy League Schools in the USF/Diadora Classic. Santa Clara will face Brown on October 4 and Harvard on October 6 at Negoesco Stadium on the USF campus.

Santa Clara will host its final non-conference tilt on October 10 when they welcome San Diego State to "The Shaw" in a re-match of last year's season opener. The Broncos last non-conference game will be at Sacramento State on November 11.

The West Coast Conference title defense will begin on the road at the University of Portland on October 13 and continue just one week later at Gonzaga. After their final WCC road game at San Diego on October 25, the Broncos will return home for their final three league contests.

The Broncos will take on Saint Mary's November 2 and the University of San Francisco on November 12. They will conclude the 2002 regular season with a match against Loyola Marymount.
